The grey ghost flies erratically over the fields at sunset, bobbing and weaving in what might otherwise seem to be a meaningless and ill-directed trajectory. Yet, while on the wing, this skillful raptor spends this time scanning the ground for the slightest movements and listening for barest of audible sounds that might indicate the presence of prey. The male, with its grey color, approaches like a silent phantom surprising prey and humans alike. For these characteristics it has been given the nickname, “grey ghost.” For those individuals that have watched these birds of prey in action, it is a name that is lived up to. For if one averts their gaze for even a second, the bird can disappear from sight, like a spectral aura. #NortherHarrier #GreyGhost
