Pied but not a Piper 4616 - a photo on Flickriver

            The Pied Avocet is a wader that breeds in Europe and Asia. It is a bird of predominantly white plumage with a striking black cap and black patches on its back and wings.  Like their American cousins, the American Avocet, they feed by scything the water and mud with their long slender bills.  That is to say, they swing their bills from side to side while walking slowly forward.  They eat predominantly crustaceans and insects.  This bird was photographed at Slimbridge Wetlands in the UK but it is interesting to note that by 1840 these birds were extinct in Great Britain.  They were successfully reintroduced into the UK in the mid 1900's.  Let us hope that they do not slip away with the pied piper again.  #PiedAvocet
