Launching Macro Photography: The Universe at Our Feet – I need your help via Kickstarter!

This will be the definitive resource for macro photographers – 352 pages, hardcover, 9” x 9”, if you enjoy my work or just love macro photography, this is going to be THE book on the subject. Covering everything from the basics of equipment, exposure, techniques and lighting, through various masterclasses with specific subjects and so much more, this is decidedly NOT an “art” book, it’s an instructional how-to that encompasses all of the knowledge you could ever need for close-up photography, plus the beautiful art that results from such efforts.

Publishing can be expensive, especially when I want the book to be printed here in Canada rather than outsourcing production to China (this is quite important to me). In order to make this book a reality, it is being crowd-funded on Kickstarter where you can walk away with a copy of the book at a price much less than retail, especially if you get in early! To be clear: this WILL NOT happen without your support. I don’t often ask for much, and you’ll be receiving all of my photographic experience in exchange. You’ll be inspired, it will make you curious, and it will answer every question.

Raw numbers: It’s not economically viable to print less than 1000 copies, this is the bare minimum. Especially with fancy features like spot gloss on the cover and high-quality paper on a sheet-fed press, plus all of the logistics for shipping anywhere in the world, the bare bones number to get this project off the ground is CAD$30,000 or roughly USD$22,200 with today’s exchange rate. That’s what we’re aiming for to “green-light” this project. This project either happens with the best possible results or it doesn’t happen at all. Let’s make it happen! Options include:

-Hardcover Edition (352 pages) – CAD$48 (early bird pricing as low as $38!)
-Limited Leather-bound Edition (384 pages, extended musings, mistakes, and yet-to-explore ideas) – CAD$250
-Hardcover Edition + Signed/Framed Print of “Essence of Reverie” (cover shot) – CAD$150
If the book doesn’t interest you or budget is a concern but you still want to help, there’s an option for a hand-written thank-you note for your support as well. Every bit counts, just as it did with my book Sky Crystals – now out of print. If you missed out on that book, there will be a section of this one dedicated to snowflakes and freezing soap bubbles as well.
MSRP will be CAD$60-80, dependent on quantity produced and upgrades if over-funded.

People had suggested that I do smaller books on individual topics – water droplet refraction photography, flowers, insects, ultraviolet and even 3D macro photography. I could have. It might have even been easier. I’d kick myself for not creating this “macro photography bible” that includes everything, every experimental success and failure and everything learned along the way. All of these topics are synergistic, making something much greater than the sum of the parts.
