American Badger (Taxidea taxus) - a photo on Flickriver

My wife and I had heard that Burrowing Owls were seen outside a huge tunnel that had been excavated by a badger. Many had observed the owls; few had caught a glimse of the badger. After previous visits without encountering either, we were fortunate that someone was kind enough to tell us he had just seen the badger. I raced to the spot and was able to get some shots before he disappeared into his burrow. On our next trip to Las Gallinas, we saw the Burrowing Owl sitting in front of this same hole (dark area in left corner of photo). Given that these small owls are part of the badger's diet, we wonder how the owls have avoided becoming prey, especially because the badger is considered "one of North Amercia's 10 most fearsome predators."
