nyc - barnard lehman library 8 - a photo on Flickriver

Barnard College's Lehman Library (O'Connor and Kilham, with Victor and Aladar Olgyay, 1957-1959). Previously glimpsed here; as of this writing, the building has been emptied of books and is undergoing demolition. No one would mistake it for a masterpiece, but I was always charmed by its understated, humble institutional modernism. What can I say? The smell of the staircases reminded me of childhood. Heaven help us once all these buildings are gone and we realize that Contemporary Campus Glasso-Cheeriness is more banal and alienating than "cold," "inhuman" postwar Modernism ever was. RIP.
