            Here's a closer view of the Yanonali tower and Barker Hill in the background. The hill sits just east of  Sycamore Canyon, where the 1977 Sycamore fire started. More than 300 homes burned in that fire, in the span of a few hours, including those on that hill. In fact, all the houses you see in this picture burned in either the Sycamore fire, or in the Coyote Fire in 1964. The Coyote Fire burned the entire face of the mountain, plus the other side of it: a total of more than 30,000 acres. [Later...] Everything earlier in this paragraph was written before the Tea Fire of November 2008 and the Jesusita Fire of 2009, which burned most of what you see in the background of this picture.

Radio stuff: three feed wires lead from the building to the tower, for the three stations that use the tower: KZSB/1290 (500 watts day, 120 watts night), belongs to Wendy McCaw, owner of the Santa Barbara News-Press; KCLU/1340 (650 watts), the local NPR affiliate and the AM half of KCLU-FM in Thousand Oaks; and KOSJ/1490, the latest of almost countless format, ownership and call letter changes going back to 1926. Back then began  KDB, now a classical FM station on 93.7. Being close to salt water, all three signals carry well along the coast, and all three are lost quickly on the other side of: the Santa Ynez mountains behind Santa Barbara.
