Life is different on semi-stable dunes. Not just any desert plant can survive. One has to putup with constant battering from sandblasting wind, the relentless sun, unending dryness, and incessant attempts by the sand to bury one’s tender leaves. However a few plants have, though time, rolled up their sleeves and dug in.

Rough mulesears produces radiating underground stems called rhizomes (pronounced rye-zomes). Mulesers send runners and sinks new root ahead of Coral Pinks ever-moving sand. Thus as the dune moves, the plant moves with it.

Rough mulesears is named for its soft fuzzy mule-ear shaped leaves. Hairy leaves help reduce water loss by diffusing the sun’s radiation. This species has courser leaves than most, probably to withstand the onslaught of blowing sand. Park Sign  d
