Hverir - a photo on Flickriver

Hverir

            Hverir is a high temperature geothermal area on the east side of Mt. Namafjall. Here you walk between mud pots and fumaroles in steam and sulfur fumes. The whole area boils, bubbles and sizzles.


Day 7 part3 . Around Reykjahlíð and Myvatn.

This day there will be an incredible number of highlights 

First we visited Dettifoss (east side) and then we turned south to road 1.
After about 4 km on road 1 going west at the beginning of road 88  there is an old crater Hrossaborg  were you can drive into in your car!! It has the shape of an amphitheatre.
Lavafields along road 1 to Reykjahlíð.
The orange colored mt. Namafjall (namaskard)  a large area with a lot of geothermal activities.
Hverir: walking around a high-temperature geothermal area with steam, mud pots and fumaroles. The whole area boils, bubbles and hisses; (and stinks of sulfur)
Mývatn Nature Baths; swimming outside in hot water
Hverfjall volcano: you can walk around the black crater with a fantastic view 
Lava field park  Dimmuborgir: This is a place were the trolls live. Unfortunately we didn't see one that day.
Lake Myvatn with Skútustaðagígar:  pseudo crater, formed by gas explosions when  hot thinflowing molten lava flows over the wetlands. 
Kröflustöð, a geothermal power plant which is surrounded by steam and a lot of pipes and well protection domes.
The volcano Krafla with a crater lake Viti and the Krafla lavafield  Leirhnjukur with black and red lava and steam, hot mud pots, sulfur everywere. Is this earth?
Because there is so much to see in this area you should stay there for at least a few days
