Με την ονομασία Ναυμαχία της Ναυπάκτου παρέμεινε στην ιστορία η ναυμαχία που έγινε στις 7 Οκτωβρίου του 1571 αφενός μεν μεταξύ των ενωμένων στόλων της Ισπανίας, της Βενετίας, της Γένουας, των Ιπποτών της Μάλτας, του δουκάτου της Σαβοΐας, του δουκάτου του Ουρμπίνο, του μεγάλου δουκάτου της Τοσκάνης και του Πάπα υπό την ονομασία Lega Santa (Ιερή Ένωση) αφετέρου δε του ενιαίου στόλου της Οθωμανικής Αυτοκρατορίας, στην είσοδο του Κορινθιακού Κόλπου -κοντά στις νήσους νότιες Εχινάδες και στο Ακρωτήριο Σκρόφα. Η δε ονομασία της προήλθε όχι από την πόλη της Ναυπάκτου αλλά από την ονομασία (θέση) του Κόλπου που έγινε η ναυμαχία, επειδή τότε ολόκληρος ο Κόλπος λεγόταν από τους Ενετούς "Κόλπος της Ναυπάκτου". Οι Δυτικοί ιστορικοί χρησιμοποιούν την ονομασία Ναυμαχία του Λεπάντο (Naval Battle of Lepanto) -(Naval Battle of Lepanto)- από το μεσαιωνικό όνομα της πόλης.

Under the name Naval Battle of Nafpaktos, the naval battle took place on 7 October 1571 on the one hand between the united fleets of Spain, Venice, Genoa, the Knights of Malta, the Duchy of Savoy, the duke of Urbino, the great Duchy of Tuscany and the Pope under the name of Lega Santa (Sacred Union), and of the Ottoman Empire's single fleet at the entrance of the Corinthian Gulf, near the southern Ehinades and the Cape of Skropha. Its name came not from the city of Nafpaktos but from the name of the Gulf that became the naval battle, because then the entire Bay was called by the Venetians "Gulf of Nafpaktos". Western historians use the name Naval Battle of Lepanto (Naval Battle of Lepanto) - the medieval name of the city.
