            Chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra), Neuchâtel, Suisse.
Le chamois vit pour le plus souvent en  moyenne montagne, entre 1500 et 2200 mètres d’altitude, entre forêt et prairie d'altitude. C'est au printemps qu'il descend le plus bas, après les restrictions de l'hiver, au cours duquel il peut perdre de 25 à 40 % de son poids. On le rencontre parfois jusqu'au fond des vallées, entre 400 et 800 mètres d’altitude, broutant l’herbe fraiche, les jeunes pousses et les bourgeons, voir certaines fleurs comme les crocus. Au fur et à mesure que les jours rallongent et se réchauffent, il remonte vers les sommets. En été, il peut rechercher sa nourriture à plus 3000 mètres d’altitude jusqu' à la limite de la neige.
