            Martre des pins (Martes martes), Neuchâtel, Suisse.
La martre est un animal solitaire en dehors de la période de reproduction, qui s'est adaptée à une existence essentiellement arboricole. Elle se déplace sur les arbres aussi agilement qu'un écureuil, par contre elle chasse principalement au sol. Durant la saison estivale, elle se repose dans des abris naturels des arbres comme les cavités  dans les troncs sur une fourche de branches ou un amas de lierre, qu'elle va utiliser sans y faire d’aménagement. En hiver elle s'abrite plutôt dans des galeries d'autres animaux comme le blaireau, sous les racines et les souches ou sous des pierriers. Il lui arrive parfois de chercher refuge dans une grange ou un grenier, toutefois ça reste rare et d’habitude, elle évite les habitations humaines. Elle évite aussi les milieux ouverts où elle sait ne trouver aucun gîte et sait aussi qu’à découvert, elle est vulnérable.
