Cerf rouge en rût

            La période du rut s’étend de mi-septembre à la fin octobre. Les mâles sont alors agressifs et de ce fait dangereux. En cas de rencontre avec un autre mâle, après une phase d'intimidation, les deux adversaires vont mener un combat très violent durant lequel ils se projettent la tête en avant l'un contre l'autre dans le but de déséquilibrer l'adversaire. Ces combats peuvent conduire à l'abandon ou à des blessures assez graves voire la mort par épuisement des deux cerfs s'ils restent coincés par leurs bois emmêlés : seuls des mâles de puissance et de ramure comparables s'affrontent de la sorte.
