Leaving Hrafntinnusker - a photo on Flickriver

            The evening before this--our first night on the trail--there was a blizzard at Hrafntinnusker that would have made camping very, very uncomfortable in our three season tent. In fact, it wasn't so much a matter of wimpiness as necessity that we shifted into the mountain refuge that night, since the accumulation of snow was collapsing our and others' tents. Each of our remaining nights on trail in Iceland, however--when the weather was very rainy and windy but not snowy-- we also stayed in the refuges, so I can't make the same excuse there. But I have no regrets.... We've had plenty of very long stretches in tents, and I usually prefer it to almost any alternative, but with the weather this summer I for the first time ever got pretty darn tired of camping. Mrs. Orca near Hrafntinnusker, on the way to Álftavatn, Laugavegur Trail, Icelandic Highlands.
