Compton Castle, near Paignton, Devon

            More a fortified manor house than a castle. However it does have a curtain wall surrounding the house offering good security. It was the home of the half brother of Sir Walter Raleigh,  Sir Humphrey Gilbert, who was a noted warrior in the service of Queen Elizabeth 1st.   It was he that crossed the Atlantic in June 1583 with a small fleet of ships, and at the port of St Johns laid claim to Newfoundland in the name of his Queen. 
 On a return voyage to establish a colony there  his ship foundered in a storm and was sunk with all hands.
