Cartridge Box with a Legend - a photo on Flickriver

            Regulation .58 Caliber Cartridge Box.

  This cartridge box has a unique history. It was originally owned by J.J. Raynor of Company E, 2nd Rhode Island Volunteers. It was dropped at the Battle of Fredericksburg in 1862. It was carried by an unknown Confederate soldier until it was "recaptured" at Gettysburg in 1863. Manufacturer C.S. Storms of New York City made 15,000 of this type of cartridge box during the war.
