Waiting for Dinner

A bit of a change of scene today. I wanted to shoot something for a 10-10-10 challenge and reckoned I would have lots of opportunity since I would be at Cub Scout camp in one of the most beautiful state parks in Texas. Unfortunately, a sick son resulted in us coming home early so I spent some time round the house shooting macros instead.

Garden Spiders are some of my favourite macro subjects. The are rather scary when you look at them up close and, unlike flying insects, they tend to stay put long enough for me to get the lighting ratios sorted out.

In this case, I decided to go for a somewhat unusual crop. The location of the web meant that it wasn't possible to get the whole spider in front of the nice blurry tree-and-sky background (the web is in the corner of our car port and there is a white beam just out of shot to the left and a horizontal beam immediately above) but I loved the "writing" on the web and the curve of the legs so I decided to concentrate on those while leaving a fair chunk of the spider in the top left. I think it works but I suppose I'm a bit biased.
