The Irish connection - a photo on Flickriver

            Iarnród Éireann's class 22000, unit 22343, stands at Cork Kent station with the 5.20pm service to Dublin Heuston.

Built circa 2008 by Hyundai, Japan, these units form the backbone of Inter-City traffic across the Irish rail network and come with a top speed of 100mph. Originally delivered as 3 or 6 car units, since 2014 they have operated as 3, 4 or 5 car units. Set 22343 is one of the 4-car examples. 

The station lies just a couple of hundred yards from the port complex on the River Lee (part of which can be seen in the background), and it's a navigation of around 10 miles from here to the Atlantic Ocean. 

On a more sombre note, any such navigation will take you close by the deep-water port of Cobh. Then known as Queenstown, it was from here that the Titanic (en route from Southampton and Cherbourg to New York) made her fateful journey on 14th April 1912 - she would sink the next day with the loss of over 1500 lives. 

The company visible, Southern Milling Ltd, is the largest such operation in the south of Ireland and produces livestock feed for the animal and poultry sectors. Handily placed therefore to import ingredients as well as service the extensive farming base in these parts.
