« C’est ainsi que mon foyer devint à cette époque le déplacement, l’attente aux stations et aux gares — le voyage. Les quatre-vingt-dix kilomètres quotidiens ou, avec les parcours à pied, les trois heures d’aller-retour entre le village et la ville formaient un espace de temps qui simultanément constituait, eu égard aux circonstances, mon espace vital. Cela me permettait chaque fois de respirer, d’être enfin à nouveau au milieu de ces personnes pour la plupart inconnues, dont aucune n’avait plus besoin d’être rangée par moi dans une catégorie et qui ne me classaient moi-même dans aucune. Pour le temps du voyage nous n’étions ni riches ni pauvres, ni bons ni mauvais, ni allemands ni slovènes, tout au plus jeunes et vieux — et le soir, lors des retours, j’avais l’impression qu’entre nous l’âge même ne comptait plus. Mais alors qu’étions-nous ? Dans le train sans classes, de simples “voyageurs” ou “passagers”, et dans l’autocar — c’était encore plus beau — des “hôtes de voyage”, comme dit l’allemand. » (P.H.)
