            An industrial stocking frame was a type of mechanical knitting machine used to manufacture hosiery, particularly stockings, in the textile industry during the 19th and early 20th centuries. It was a significant advancement over hand knitting and was initially powered by steam or water, making it faster and more efficient. The machine used a series of needles and hooks to create knitted fabric in a continuous tube, which could then be shaped into stockings or other garments. The stocking frame was a crucial part of the industrial revolution in the textile sector, significantly increasing production capacity and reducing labor costs. The most famous stocking frame was developed by William Lee in the late 16th century, but it evolved over time into more sophisticated, mechanized versions used in factories.

This one, captured at cromford Mill in the Peak District was made in about 1800.
