The Franciscan monastery of the Recollection of St Anne of Mount Zion is situated south-east of the city, at the foot of Churuquella Hill. It was begun in 1601 as a support building for the existing Franciscan dwelling in the city centre. One of its main functions was to accommodate the missionary monks involved in the teaching of the Christian doctrine to ethnic groups who lived in the south-eastern regions. The original work was funded by a rich miner, Hernando de Valencia, and was a modest single-storey building. As the years went by and the monastery’s activities increased, the building was extended courtesy of several donations.

After numerous problems with the colonial structure and as many restorations, the church was refashioned in the Neo-Gothic style. Legend has it that a rich treasure, known as the “Tanga Tanga Tomb”, lies beneath its foundations. The monastery consists of the church and several interior cloisters, as well as Pedro Anzúres Square, which served as a processional space for the religious complex. The church was rebuilt at the beginning of the 20th century, when several structural and ornamental elements adopted a Neo-Gothic style. The ground plan is articulated around a nave and semicircular apse, and a lateral aisle added at a later date to accommodate the chapel and sacristy.

The structure of the nave is defined by pointed transverse arches supporting the coffered roof. Meanwhile, the choir displays the original 17th-century carved stalls, initially located in the Church of St Francis. On the reconstructed façade, two symmetrical towers flank the portal. These square-plan doublestage towers have eight semicircular apertures for bells on the top stage and culminate in four pinnacles which surround the elliptical dome, crowned by a fifth pinnacle. The classical portal is made up of four pilasters and a triangular pediment whose tympanum displays the Franciscan shield. A semicircular window, corresponding to the choir, sits above the pediment.
