Previously known as Hawes Junction, Garsdale was once the junction for the Midland Railway branch to Hawes which made an end on junction with the NER line from Northallerton to form a through route. The former trackbed can be seen curving away to the right. Passenger services ceased from Northallerton as early as 1954 with a token one train a day service surviving from Garsdale to Hawes until 1959 when that section was abandoned altogether. Freight services from Northallerton to Hawes survived until 1964 after which the line was cut back to Redmire where a quarry supplied limestone to the steelworks at Redcar until 1992. Sporadic MOD traffic kept the line open until the Wensleydale Railway started operating passenger trains again in 2004. What an asset to the areas tourism it would be if the line could be reopened throughout. If the Welsh Highland can be rebuilt, who knows ?
