Strawn Citrus Packing House District

            This abandoned collection of buildings once was a packing house located outside Deleon Springs, FL.  Ironically, this packinghouse landed amongst the many closed citrus facilities for the same reason that it had once been a famous location.  In the late 19th century, several catastrophic freezes drove the bulk of Florida citrus to locations further south, but this packing district prospered as it was one of the few to survive in this region.  Although the district survived for nearly a century, another terrible freeze struck on Christmas Even in 1983, and this time the Strawn district would not escape unscathed.  A quarter of Florida's citrus crops were destroyed, and the citrus industry again pushed itself farther south.

Although the area became part of the National Register of Historic Places in 1993, it has sat abandoned and closed off for years, with no future plans solidified as of this time.  It remains a popular Florida rural exploration site, and vandals have also repeatedly ransacked the property.
