1970 Ross + Sutherland Constabulary Weasel tracked ATV

            A few fascinating snippets pertaining to Sutherland Constabulary, and its successor (Ross & Suthertland Constabulary from 16.5.1963). I wish to extend my appreciation to those kind folks (family members of former officers) who supplied the photos/cuttings.

Ross & Sutherland Weasel - out in the snow-covered moorland of the force area in 1970, and being driven by the late "Barrie" MacKenzie. The M29 Weasel tracked all-terrain vehicle was designed in WW2 for military use and was built by the Studebaker Company. After the war, a number of these were offered for sale. The rugged terrain of Ross and Cromarty and Sutherland meant that such a vehicle (despite only achieving about 5 miles to gallon) was the only means of accessing remote police radio sites laden with equipment  -  and also for transporting personnel/casualty in mountain rescue searches.
