Grief :'( - a photo on Flickriver

Grief :'(

            I pulled the camera out to take a life-documentary kind of shot this morning and I was greeted with a blinking "Err" message on the readout and in the viewfinder. Shutter release works, and it mentions the shutter speed and aperture while clicking. No photo is recorded on the card, though. It doesn't try to focus. There's no metering. There's no 'kick' in the shutter release, which means that something -- most likely the lens blades -- isn't moving. I checked that the mirror rises up all right.

Tried changing the lenses, no go. Tried cleaning lens contacts, no go. Pulled out the D80 manual and the trouble-shooting page mentioned an ominous "Camera malfunction" as the error description. The suggested remedy is to take the camera to the service centre.

Vesper is 15 months old.
