Memoir Strip (Lr5 vs Capture NX2) - a photo on Flickriver

This time, the ISO25600 shot was processed in Lightroom 5 to see whether the king of Raw Converters is really ahead of its less popular alternative. These images are the result of iterative improvement where one result's shortcomings against the other were rectified and vice versa several times until I got tired.

Overall, Lightroom proved to be significantly easier to handle, thanks to the speed of its preview getting updated in response to changes in settings. However, it's a lot more tough to make it leave its initial results and steer it towards a different look.

The problem with Capture NX2 is the opposite. Its controls are a lot more sensitive, so it's easy to make big changes, but fine tuning is tedious. Capture NX2 did a great job with maintaining the colour integrity, despite some heavy chroma noise reduction. Lightroom 5, on the other hand, handled the details better.

The results are so close together that it's tough to call a winner. It's a bit disappointing that each of them requires a lot of, largely futile, effort to get them to depart from their default "look". Capture NX2, by default, delivers more punch while Lightroom 5 delivers more finesse. I suppose the winner would then depend on the choice of subject and style of expression.
