Wandering in the Raggeds - a photo on Flickriver

            Bright stands of Quaking Aspen (Populus tremuloides) catch noon-day sun and ignite under a blue sky and the summits of the Ruby Range, Raggeds Wilderness, Colorado.

Moments of joy have been a little harder to come by this past year, and feelings of freedom have been less frequent and more fleeting. A stand-out exception to that year-long trend was a visit our family made over a long weekend to the Aspen forests west of Crested Butte. My oldest son claims to be uninterested in autumn colors, and he indicates that, "it's just yellow." He is also color-blind, and I wonder how that affects his appreciation, or whether he's simply expressing a symptom of being a teenager. Regardless, I was beside myself wandering through this forest and up into the wilderness. We noticed that people had carved their names into the white bark over many decades, and the oldest date scars we found were from 1942 when America was in the thick of trying to beat back fascism and win World War II. Remarkable to think how the world has changed in so many ways during the intervening years, and how it has failed to change in so many others.

I hope people are able to take some time away from work in the coming weeks and safely connect with friends and family! Just think how much harder it would be to maintain those connections with 1942 technology...
