The Ravages of Time - a photo on Flickriver

            The sun shines through the sparse canopy of an ancient Rocky Mountain Bristlecone Pine (Pinus aristata) on the shoulders of Mount Bross, Colorado.

The oldest individual found of this species is just over 2,500 years old, which is almost 1,500 years older than this particular grove. The Rocky Mountain Bristlecone does not live as long as the P. longaeva individuals that live in California, Nevada, and Utah, but it is still impressive to walk amongst them and know that this stand was already several hundred years old when the Ancient Pueblo people were building cliff dwellings in the four-corners area. 

The Mount Bross grove is not as extensive as it once was due to the fact that 19th century miners discovered that the resin-rich, extremely dense wood could be used to support mine tunnels without rotting or collapsing as quickly as other species of timber. In retrospect, it seems a shame to log such old beings to support a short-term boom and bust economy. However, I imagine I would have a different perspective if I were a miner 150 y ago.
