Lake of the Winds

            2019-09-05, Day 4
The low-angle of the setting sun paints bright splashes of light onto the walls of the granite basin surrounding Lake of the Winds in the Beartooth Wilderness, Montana.

We arrived at the lakeshore in the late afternoon having covered the trail-less distance between this basin and our last camp somewhat faster than anticipated. We expected the lake bed to be comprised mostly of sharp, pointy granite, and we were surprised to find that the flatter area at about 10 o'clock in this photo was made up of coarse sandy material and the water was relatively shallow. Perhaps the wind is fierce enough to make sand in this place, though our experience was only of placid water. Regardless, it was a pleasure to strip off the hiking clothes that had been worn for many miles and wade into the icy chill with the feet sinking into the sand. The dive under the surface for a proper swim was most invigorating.

Now being some months removed from the experience, I do not recall how we passed the time from afternoon on into evening. No doubt there was a good deal of idle confabulation, puttering, and faffing to which we devoted ourselves. I do remember the wonderful smells of daal wafting toward me as I composed this photo though, and how delightful the simple food tasted. One of the beautiful things about backpacking in wilderness is that when moments such as these arrive, there is truly nothing else one should be doing. The only reasonable thing to do is to stop time and absorb that which surrounds.
