Beartooth Jewels

            Twisted and fractured rocks cup the twin gems of Maryott Lake high up on the Beartooth Plateau, Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness, Montana. A cadre of fish intermittently plied the liminal space between water and air, flinging splashes of life onto the gleaming surface.

Given where we started, this camp was three full days into the wilderness, and nearly two full days off-trail, navigated mostly with a compass and map. We approached the location depicted here more or less by the line of sight shown from my vantage in this photo. I do not think I have hopped, balanced, and teetered on more rocks at any other point in my life while wearing a full pack. When it became clear the legs lacked the gumption to make it to the next reasonably sized lake, we began the surprisingly difficult process of locating a flat place to erect the tent. We searched for over a quarter of an hour before finally discovering a lovely small bench on the western shore tucked out of the wind.

At this point in the evening, the growing intensity of the late-day light suggested it would be advantageous to forego further puttering about the campsite and to drag one's weary, stiff legs up to a glorious high-point for an expansive view of the sunset. This idea solicited substantive protest from the heels and knees, but the spirit was headstrong and lurched upward and away from camp toward a nearby knob of jumbled granite. The mind knows what it wants, and sometimes the body is shackled to flights of fancy that will not be denied.
