Quinnebaugh Meadows - a photo on Flickriver

The summit of Mount Lockhart (11,644 ft; 3,550 m) and its adjoining ridge-line catch late-day alpenglow from the setting sun above Quinnebaugh Meadows, Beartooth Wilderness, Montana.

Taking in the fading light from the vantage of the meadow was a fine way to end the day. It was a day substantially more difficult than I had imagined. A few days before, my hiking partner asked, "Did you realize we have 3,000 feet to climb in 3 miles right out of the car? And after that, we descend 500 feet and then immediately bush-whack up another 1,000 feet in another 2.5-3 miles when we leave the trail? The final pass into the next drainage is 10,400 feet, and then we meet the trail again and head down 1,600 feet to the meadows." Suffice to say, I had failed to take in these salient points in the days prior. Romanticism about the wilderness, cider press construction, and general pre-occupation with finishing up seemingly important work tasks prevented me from thinking hard enough about the implications. I also foolishly bought new boots 2 weeks before the trip and only wore them out once for 4 miles. Apparently it was amateur-hour in the planning department and it is not hard to predict that, yes, I got a raging heel blister within the first 2 miles. This metamorphosed into a red, weeping, heel of pain for the rest of the trip. It was difficult to get moleskin to adhere whilst walking up steep trail with a full pack. I finally figured out a system that would stick involving band-aids and a donut of moleskin, but it was too late for preventative measures. I was smarter than this when I was 17, when I bought boots months in advance of my first backpacking trip and broke them in properly before heading out and depending on them.

All that said, the setting sun kept distracting me during spaghetti dinner. I temporarily forgot all about my self-inflicted foot predicament, despite the scent of parmesan. If you look closely, our bright grey tent fly is visible through the boughs of the lower branches on the right of the frame.
