Cleft of Brúarfoss - a photo on Flickriver

            Dark basalt and glacial meltwater interact in unexpectedly beautiful ways, producing intense turquoise-tinged froth at Brúarfoss, Iceland. This landscape is gifted with gem-like surprises, often accompanied by frigid cold water suffused with the chill of winters past.

Being the boy that he is, my oldest son was compelled to peer as deeply into the cleft as he could, in order to witness the most intimate of riverine moments. To accomplish this, he hiked up his pants, took off his shoes, and waded out toward the curve you see here. I, being absorbed in photographing other members of the family playing in the water, was unaware of his efforts, as was my wife. We are clearly the best most attentive parents, ahem. When my son started hollering at me to join him, I hurried out there because he was right, it was an amazing site. However, I collected no photographs from that vantage, as I was concerned about slipping and losing everything. This fear was not entirely unfounded, as my feet went mostly numb by the time I returned to shore.
