Icelandic Pebble Beach - a photo on Flickriver

            The black pebble and sand beach near Vík, Iceland, contained endlessly fascinating patterns, and it felt like such a blessing to get out of the vehicle to breath the brisk North Atlantic breezes, smell the kelp and sea air while listening to Fulmars, and watch Puffins wing determinedly overhead. 

My plan for our first day in Iceland involved landing at Keflavik International at 6:00 on a Saturday morning, then renting a camper van and taking the family as far east and out of the Golden Triangle (tourist central) as we could go within a reasonable day's drive. While theoretically sound, combining jet lag with a very expansive swath of daylight hours at this summer latitude resulted in some predictable difficulties when it came to defining 'reasonable day's drive.' I pulled over in Vík because I was almost falling asleep at the wheel, and I thought some fresh air and soup from the local soup shack would help bring everyone to their senses. The soup was expensive: $15 for a pint, but it was also tasty, and since everything in Iceland is expensive, I just enjoyed the hot mushroom goodness of it, and went for a walk along the beach with the family. I have noticed that my two boys will immediately begin throwing rocks into the water, no matter where we are in the world. Come to think of it, I often join them.
