The Curious Visitor - a photo on Flickriver

            A Culpeo (Lycalopex culpaeus) perches on a boulder near Campo Torres along the Rio Ascensio, and the title refers to me, not the fox. The fox was singularly nonplused with my presence. Patagonian Beech (Nothofagus sp.) make the backdrop.

On our first outing, we tried to reach the Mirador Las Torres, but timing and circumstance conspired against us. Instead, we enjoyed a rather nice walk up the river, and managed to return to camp before dark, which was good, since none of us experienced backpackers actually managed to bring a head lamp. A dawn outing to the famed Mirador was out of the question, unfortunately, though the wildlife did not disappoint. In addition to the fox, which is not a 'true' fox, but apparently some kind of pseudo-fox canid, we witnessed a female Torrent Duck diving in the rushing glacier melt.
