Monotype (model D) #1 - a photo on Flickriver

            The Monotype was invented by Tolbert Lanston in 1896 and was mainly used to produce books. It is a highly complicated device consisting of two separate machines, a keyboard machine and a casting machine to produce the type. It is operated by compressed air and produces a wide paper tape of perforations which, when transferred to the caster, gives full instructions for each character to be cast.
