Abbatiale Saint-Pierre, Uzerche, Corrèze, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

            L’abbatiale Saint-Pierre d’Uzerche est un témoin majeur de l’art roman en Limousin, classé Monument Historique dès 1840. L’église actuelle date des XIe et XIIe siècles : à noter sa forme, typique des grandes églises de pèlerinage et son clocher, à plusieurs niveaux partant d’une base carrée et se terminant par un plan octogonal.
Des moines bénédictins commencèrent la construction de cette église au début du XIe s. et la terminèrent au XIIe s. Les 12e et 13e s. marquent l’âge d’or de l’abbaye qui est alors puissante et prospère. L'édifice est doté de trois tours de fortification, témoins de la guerre de Cent Ans. Au XVIIIe s., le roi Louis XV confirme la sécularisation de l'abbaye qui devient alors église collégiale séculière ; installation de stalles pour le collège.
Les baies géminées du clocher sont ornées de chapiteaux en calcaire finement sculptés. La crypte du XIe s., est unique en bas-limousin et reprend les dimensions et la disposition du chœur, du déambulatoire et des chapelles. Autrefois, les pèlerins venaient y vénérer les reliques de Saint Léon et de Saint Coronat.

The Saint-Pierre d'Uzerche abbey is a major witness to Romanesque art in Limousin, classified as a Historic Monument since 1840. The current church dates from the 11th and 12th centuries: note its shape, typical of large pilgrimage churches and its bell tower, on several levels starting from a square base and ending in an octagonal plan.
Benedictine monks began construction of this church at the beginning of the 11th century. and completed it in the 12th century. The 12th and 13th c. mark the golden age of the abbey, which was then powerful and prosperous. The building has three fortification towers, witnesses of the Hundred Years War. In the 18th century, King Louis XV confirmed the secularization of the abbey, which then became a secular collegiate church; installation of stalls for the college.
The twin bays of the bell tower are adorned with finely carved limestone capitals. The 11th century crypt is unique in lower Limousin and takes up the dimensions and layout of the choir, ambulatory and chapels. In the past, pilgrims came to venerate the relics of Saint Léon and Saint Coronat.
