meloncello in positano - a photo on Flickriver

            By the time we reached Positano on the Amalfi Coast, we were positively famished, even though we were due to lunch in Sorrento in the somewhat-distant future.  It was a bit late for a proper elevenses in British style, but Italy runs on a more languid clock, and a plate of buffalo mozzarella, prosciutto, melon, and fresh rocket was just what the doctor ordered.  Lonnie was hankering for a chilled coffee-based drink, but I wanted to try something a bit more local, and thus the bright orange concoction you see on my side of the table.   Amalfi may be justly known for its limoncello, an almost absurdly sweet and powerful lemon liqueur, but should get more acclamation for the aptly-named meloncello, which is just as powerful but mixes cream into a succulent cantaloupe brew to temper the sharpness.   To my palate, the perfect libation for the blazing sun of an early afternoon repast.
