A pesar de tener solo 20 cm y de ser llamado por algunos Martín pescador chico, no es el más pequeño de Colombia. Hay uno de menor tamaño llamado C. aenea que apenas si llega a los 13 cm.

            Este C. americana se parece mucho al C. amazona en sus colores pero es mucho más pequeño razón por la cual se le llama “chico”.   

Como todo Martín pescador en Colombia este Martín pescador Chico se encuentra cerca a entornos acuáticos aunque a diferencia de aquellos cuyo género es Magaceryle (grandes) suele, aparte de superficies grandes, encontrarse también en cercanías de humedales, riachuelos y caños dado su tamaño entre mediano y pequeño.

Even though this kingfisher is called “Small Kingfisher” in spanish, there is other one called Chloroceryle aenea that presents at least 5,5 inches less. This one, by the way, has similar colors compared to C. amazona which is recognized because is much bigger.
