Si bien no suelen ser muy coloridos, los espigueros y semilleros, especialmente aquellos que hacen parte de género sporophila, me generan un sentimiento especial.

            Su pico rechoncho y hasta desproporcionado con relación a su tamaño en su mayoría inferior a los 11 cm les hace ver muy simpáticos, más aún cuando entonan mirando al horizonte, sus dulces y melodiosos trinos.

Tan pronto vi a este espiguero variable desde el vehículo en un pastizal a borde de carretera antes de llegar al hotel, no dudé en lanzarme como un resorte por un costado, incluso de forma imprudente, retardando a los compañeros y por ende, la hora de llegada al hotel. Pero así pudieran ser comunes estos bichitos allí, sabía que esta especie ocurre solo en la costa pacífica Colombiana y preferí asegurar el “lifer” o plumazo, no fuera que no lo viera otra vez o tuviera que esperar un nuevo viaje, vaya usted a saber cuando, para tener la oportunidad de registrarlo. 

I like these small seedeaters which exhibit in my opinion a disproportionate beak making them lovely creatures. This Variable Seedeater occurs in Colombia only in the pacific coast, so it was great to spot one even before arriving the hotel.
