War Cemetery Pordoi

In the middle of the huge mountains of the Dolomites the People's Association has erected for the dead of the hard mountain battles of the First World War, a war cemetery directly on Pordoi pass. Here, at an altitude of 2,239 meters, the visitor sees only a few kilometers from the summit of the Col di Lana, behind the former frontline of Ampezaner Dolomites in the south and the ice of the Marmolada (3,342).

The construction of the military cemetery Pordoi dates back to its beginnings from before the Second World War. The crypt had been completed by the National Association; inside her already 8,582 Austrian and German dead of the First World War had received their final resting place, as the Second World War interrupted the further expansion. 1956 started with the continuation of the work, with the dead of World War II were buried in earth graves. The building is divided into three clearly identifiable stages. A wide circular wall diameter of about 54 meters encloses a 8.5 meter wide Erdring to rest in the 847 deaths of World War II. The second stage is formed by a five-meter-high circular wall with 30 meters diameter, from the middle of the third stage rises a 8.5 meter high octagonal building. On top of this octagon three narrow notches are inserted on each side, as a kind of light that illuminate the interior frieze. In the middle of the hall, whose floor is made of porphyry slabs, is on a pedestal, a flame shell. On the side walls are larger than life figures of grieving soldiers, formed of Italian limestone. The inauguration took place on 19 September held in 1959.

Mitten in der gewaltigen Bergwelt der Dolomiten hat der Volksbund für die Toten der harten Gebirgskämpfe des Ersten Weltkrieges eine Kriegsgräberstätte unmittelbar am Pordoi-Pass errichtet. Hier, in einer Höhe von 2.239 Metern, sieht der Besucher nur wenige Kilometer entfernt die Kuppe des Col di Lana, dahinter das ehemalige Frontgebiet der Ampezaner Dolomiten und im Süden das Eis der Marmolata (3.342 ).

Der Bau der Kriegsgräberstätte Pordoi stammt in seinen Anfängen noch aus der Zeit vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. Die Krypta war bereits vom Volksbund fertiggestellt worden; in ihrem Inneren hatten schon 8.582 österreichische und deutsche Tote des Ersten Weltkrieges ihre letzte Ruhestätte erhalten, als der Zweite Weltkrieg den weiteren Ausbau unterbrach. 1956 wurde mit der Fortführung der Arbeiten begonnen, wobei die Toten des Zweiten Weltkrieges in Erdgräbern bestattet wurden. Der Bau ist in drei deutlich erkennbare Stufen gegliedert. Eine weite Rundmauer von über 54 Meter Durchmesser umschließt einen 8,5 Meter breiten Erdring, in dem 847 Tote des Zweiten Weltkrieges ruhen. Die zweite Stufe wird von einer über fünf Meter hohen Rundmauer mit 30 Meter Durchmesser gebildet, aus deren Mitte als dritte Stufe sich ein 8,5 Meter hoher achteckiger Baukörper erhebt. Am oberen Rand dieses Oktogons sind auf jeder Seite drei schmale Scharten eingelassen, die als eine Art Lichtfries den Innenraum erhellen. In der Mitte der Halle, deren Fußboden aus Porphyrplatten besteht, befindet sich auf einem Podest eine Flammenschale. An den Seitenwänden stehen die überlebensgroßen Figuren trauernder Soldaten, geformt aus italienischem Muschelkalk. Die Einweihung fand am 19. September 1959 statt.
In 2008 wurde die Zufahrtsstraße vom Verwalterhaus bis zum Friedhof ausgebaut und die Fertigstellung der Hangbefestigung und Drainagearbeiten abgeschlossen.

In mezzo alle enormi montagne delle Dolomiti l'Associazione Popolare ha eretto per i morti delle dure battaglie di montagna della prima guerra mondiale, un cimitero di guerra direttamente sul Passo Pordoi. Qui, ad un'altitudine di 2.239 metri, il visitatore vede a pochi chilometri dalla vetta del Col di Lana, in primo piano le Dolomiti d'Ampezzo e a sud il ghiacciaio della Marmolada (3.342).

La costruzione del cimitero militare Pordoi risale le sue origini prima della seconda guerra mondiale. La cripta era stata completata dall'Associazione Nazionale; all'interno già 8.582 morti austriaci e tedeschi della prima guerra mondiale avevano ricevuto il loro ultimo luogo di riposo, la seconda guerra mondiale interruppe l'ulteriore espansione. Nel 1956 è iniziata la continuazione del lavoro, con la sepoltura dei caduti della seconda guerra mondiale. L'edificio è diviso in tre fasi chiaramente identificabili. Un ampio muro circolare del diametro di circa 54 metri racchiude una vasta sala circolare di c.a 8,5 metri dove riposano 847 morti della seconda guerra mondiale. Il secondo stadio è costituito da una sala di cinque metri di altezza ed un muro circolare con diametro di 30 metri, a partire dalla metà della terza fase sorge una costruzione ottogonale di 8,5 metri di altezza. In cima a questo ottagono sono inserite tre strette feritoie su ogni lato, come una sorta di luce che illuminano il fregio interno. Nel mezzo della sala, il cui pavimento è fatto di lastre di porfido, è posta su di un piedistallo una lampada a conchiglia. Sulle pareti a lato sono poste grandi figure della vita di soldati, formate di calcare italiano. L'inaugurazione ha avuto luogo il 19 settembre 1959.
