Wittenoom
Wittenoom ist eine Geisterstadt in der Pilbara-Region des australischen Bundesstaates Western Australia. Sie liegt etwa 1100 Kilometer nordnordöstlich der Hauptstadt Perth in der Gebirgskette Hamersley Range.

Seit den 1930er Jahren wurde in den nahegelegenen Schluchten Wittenoom Gorge und Yampire Gorge Blauasbest abgebaut, der damals ein beliebtes Baumaterial war. So entstand ab 1947 Wittenoom als Arbeitersiedlung und stieg in den 1950er Jahren zur größten Stadt der Pilbara-Region auf. Da die Mine nicht rentabel war und die Gesundheitsbedenken bezüglich des Asbestabbaus stiegen, wurde die Mine 1966 geschlossen und der Ort seit den 1970er Jahren schrittweise aufgegeben.

Heute lebt nur noch ein Einwohner dauerhaft in Wittenoom, übrigens ein Österreicher. Der Ort erhält jedoch keine staatlichen Leistungen wie zum Beispiel Stromversorgung mehr. Im Juni 2007 wurde der Stadtstatus per amtlicher Bekanntmachung aufgehoben. Der Name der Stadt wurde daraufhin von offiziellen Karten und Straßenschildern entfernt und der Shire of Ashburton darf Straßen schließen, die in kontaminierte Zonen führen.

Wittenoom is a ghost town in the Pilbara region of the Australian state of Western Australia. It is located about 1100 kilometers north-northeast of the capital Perth in the Hamersley Range.

Blue asbestos, which was a popular building material at the time, had been mined in the nearby gorges of Wittenoom Gorge and Yampire Gorge since the 1930s. From 1947 onwards, Wittenoom emerged as a workers' settlement and in the 1950s it rose to become the largest city in the Pilbara region. As the mine was not profitable and health concerns about asbestos mining increased, the mine closed in 1966 and the site gradually abandoned since the 1970s.

Today only one resident lives permanently in Wittenoom, an Austrian by the way. However, the place no longer receives state services such as electricity supply. In June 2007 the city status was revoked by official notice. The city's name was subsequently removed from official maps and street signs, and the Shire of Ashburton is allowed to close roads that lead into contaminated areas.
