Burlesque in Time Square - a photo on Flickriver

            My street photography has always been based on shooting people from afar, not knowing they have a lens pointed at them. This way the body doesn’t tense up, they are themselves and aren’t trying to put up a mask or to hide an aspect they don’t like. This is just my particular way of taking pictures. Also, I’m very shy, which complicates things in the moment of asking someone’s permission to take a portrait. 
I had bought my Canon 50D two days before when I chose Time Square to take some pictures. I got some really great ones. Its virtually impossible not to, when you have the world at your feet, every single nationality in a five block radius, and so many lights my camera is no threat. 
This woman was passing out fliers for the Chicago play. I took some picture of her smiling and being social. She saw me and came walking toward me. I hid behind my camera, trying to shoot other people, even the ground if it would help me.
“I’ll pose for you” she said. I looked at her as if she were speaking nonsense, and she struck a pose. I clicked the shutter and she said, “you can go ahead and put it up on Facebook” as I still didn’t know exactly what would be appropriate. 
This is my tribute to this lovely woman, who showed me a side of street photography I had never known. Burlesque in Time Square.
