Eriozona syrphoides - a photo on Flickriver

A Nationally Scarce Hoverfly and quite an impressive size too giving a good impression of a bee.

I found one for the first time a couple of years ago when I first went to Harwood Forest to start looking for insects, a male that didn’t hang around.  Last year in the Spring I had a blink and you miss it encounter with a female then a similarly brief encounter with a Summer one on a different site.

This year in a slightly different part of the forest there were several females feeding on the Knapweed and were quite docile allowing for photographs.

The light wasn’t the best but I’m not complaining having finally got good views of one.  A couple of males were zipping about on patrol but never settled for a photograph so that’s the next target.
