Painting of hall nearly finished - a photo on Flickriver

            Interesting example of incompatible lighting. The compact fluorescent bulb in lower hall manfully struggles to mimic a fashionably dim tungsten colour temperature, whereas the window half way up the stairs takes light from the very high colour temperature of a near twilight blue sky. All the vertical walls in this image are the same pastel spectral rose. The differing lighting tints this from violet to orange. Comparatively speaking of course. And of course we view this image in the context of the prevailing external colour temperature. Whereas when you're in the hall your brain does sophisticated dynamic local white balancing. The result is that the image exaggerates the colour differences compared to  "reality". Camera's don't yet do dynamic local white balancing across the image.

Tediously finical exactitude was exercised in the choice of this very specific colour. "What about the lighting?" I kept asking. But hey, I'm just the techie photographer. 

(Yes I know I could have rearranged the lighting to be all of a consistent colour temperasture, and should have to have made it look "right". But that would have avoided the interesting question of the effects of lighting on colour choice.)
