Edinburgh's new tram arrives by moonlight

The first two sections of Edinburgh's new tram just having been assembled at the tram station in the middle of Princes Street at midnight on Sunday 25th April 2010.

This Spanish tram arrived from the test track in Germany on Sunday 25th April 2010 in three sections on three very long loaders, plus a fourth trailer with the parts for the long downloading ramp.They parked in Regent Road until around 10pm, when they moved into position in Princes Street for the tram to be put on the rails of the Princes Street tram station just west of the Mound.

By midnight (the time of this photograph) the first two sections had been assembled on the tram rails.

Unfortunately the tram rails part of the project has been a bit delayed, so it's going to have to sit here in Princes Street for a while.

[Technical: tricky capturing the wide dynamic range between the moon (where it's a sunny day), the highly floodlight castle beneath it, and the simple night time streetlamp illumination of the tram. The Sony A550 has an in-camera HDR feature which combines two separate exposures for this kind of situation. This is such an ex-camera HDR shot. Little extra processing was required.]
