I first acquired the flash head, hoping I'd be able to make up a power supply. I didn't realise that it wasn't a low voltage supply I could just knock up with appropriate batteries. The power pack contains the flash capacitor and most of the flash gun electronics and feeds the flash tube power across to the head. So it proved a lot simpler, and probably cheaper, to pick up the generic Metz 60 power pack as well. That takes a variety of different technology batteries. The new Metz ones are very expensive, but as usual some people offer similar cheaper versions. I got a new non-Metz dryfit lead acid gel battery for it.

Also required is a charger, which supplies 7V AC at 420mA. As usual a Metz charger is expensive, and even second hand ones are pricey. I found a cheap 7.5V 500mA charger in Maplins which it seems happy with. I'll check the voltages and current this supplies to the battery while charging against the battery makers specs to see if I need to slug it a bit. By a useful coincidence all I had to do to get the Maplin charger plug to fit the Metz socket was to trim the plastic shrouding down a bit.

I checked the light power output with a flash meter and found that the direct beam is less than one stop up on the Metz 45 I have, but the beam is a bit wider, so the total light output is nearly one stop up, as it should be.

The sync voltage is 25V, and triggers well with the GI Cactus V2s "cheap ebay" radio trigger, one of which can be seen between the head and the power pack.

I've taken a few flashguns to bits in my time, and I'm impressed by the high quality of mechanical and electronic engineering in this Metz flashgun.

Apart from the usual array of auto powers controlled by the light sensor under the head it has three manual powers: full power, winder power, and motordrive power. Winder power is designed to recycle faster than you can manually operate the winder and shutter on a film camera, and motordrive recycles faster than a motordrive film camera can shoot.
