New Informatics Building, Potter Row Development

The new Informatics building in between the Appleton Tower and Teviot House is part of a complex of buildings in what was once the Crichton Street car park between Appleton Tower and the new Student Centre. The Informatics Building is the last block before the Appleton tower, the most distant central building. The complex is known as the Potter Row Development.

The architects, Reiach & Hall, tried to fill the space in a sensitive way which integrated with the surrounding buildings. The four buildings surrounding the new edifices are the Appleton Tower (economic university brutalism), the Mosque (Islamic form in Edinburgh stone), the student centre (a patchwork of modern buildings which earlier struggled with the same kind of challenge), and Teviot House (Scottish gothic baronial). And in the background we have George Square, once a famous Georgian residential square, more than half of which has been replaced by modern tower slabs.

The first and most striking of these, the Hume Tower, was originally rather disingenuously described by its architect, Robert Matthew, as attempting to fit sensitively into the surrounding cityscape and landscape views. Decades later, in a retrospective review of his work, he was honest enough to admit in a TV interview that he'd tried to stamp his signature on the city.

Quite a challenge to the architectural imagination to fill that gap!
