Modern view of Princes Street from Calton Hill

This is a crop down of a larger and wider shot I took in 2009 from the balcony of Nelson's monument. The cropping is to make it as close as possible for ancient & modern comparison purposes with Stoddard's late 19th century photograph of the same view looking up Princes street, but taken from nearby ground level a bit over to the right. The two biggest differences between then and now are the almost complete replacement of Calton Jail with St Andrews House, and the obscuring of the Scott Monument with the Balmoral (previously North British) Hotel. (I must go back there and try to match Stoddard's view exactly.) Below is the clickable address of Stoddard's photograph.

Note from the position of the shadows in Princes Street where the sun was. The sky is pretty much blown out because I was trying to get the deep shadow detail of such as the front of St Andrews House. The mildly cloud muted direct sun was either in the image or so close to being in the image that it caused the narrow vertical band of slight magenta tint, visible in the shadier areas. That's one of the tell tale signatures of a bucket-brigade CCD sensor. I think the A350 was the last Sony DSLR to use a CCD sensor, often said to be a rather truer capturer of colour than the later technology CMOS sensors, but inherently noisier at higher ISOs.
