Richard Wright's installation in St George's Well (Jardins Publics)

Small stained glass window of handmade glass.

During the Edinburgh Festival of 2007 three artists were commissioned to produce works in a kind of distributed exhibition known as Jardins Publics. In the dark interior of a small stone hut on the Water of Leith Walkway known as St George's Well, slightly upstream from the much larger and better known St Bernard's Well, was featured this etched glass pane by Richard Wright. That the glass is a not optically perfect, but a bit rippled, is deliberate. It's hand-made glass.

The geometric design is said to reflect the geometric and philosophical ideas behind Edinburgh's New Town, a reference to such people as Patrick Geddes. This is not something the girls with leaflets in the tent outside were aware of, nor were their leaflets. Being familiar with those ideas, it did strike me that Wright might have intended such a reference, but I dismissed the idea as being too vague for an obviously carefully contrived work of art.

According to the critics who liked this, I was wrong. Either I need to do a lot more homework to appreciate this work, or it's preciously pretentious.

In trying to decide which I discovered that the best on-line photographs of this work were pretty crap, so I decided to publish this one.
