Lion guarding entrance to Piazza Pretoria, Palermo, Sicily

            This is the square that houses the Fontana Pretoria. The Piazza is a flat raised pedestrian area which is accessed by stairs from adjacent streets. One one side one of these lions guards each of the two entrance stairs at the edges. The high poilsh of the stone is due to generatios of children climbing over them. It's a strange style of lion. Not at all in the Renaissance style of the Fontana garden of statuary. It looks 20th century to me. I haven't been able to unearth any details of this lion's history.

Yes, the wall behind it is a mess of graffiti and torn off posters.
