What kind of Coal

            In less than ideal light conditions Flying Scotsman is really living up to its name and Flying through Cholsey working a circular tour via Oxford and back up the GWR  main line. In 1925 a Gresley Pacific Victor Wild. worked the Down and up limited between Paddington and Pymouth.Although the Pacific kept time and Driver Pibworth and Fireman Birkwood put in some fine preformances. These could not match Caldicot Castle with Driver Edward Rowe and Fireman Cook.During the test week on one occasion in both down and up directions the Castle gained 15 minutes on the shedule and throughout the test week burned less coal and used less water.This was of course using Welsh coking coal.But on LNER metals Pendennis Castle beat Pacific Diamond Jubilee in both coal,water consumption  and made better times between Kings Cross and Doncaster, but with the hard Yorkshire coal.These results had a profound influence on the future design of the LNER Pacifics.
